A Brief History
Castlebar, Co. Mayo
The name Castlebar is derived from the local Norman castle, the de Barry castle, which was built in the area in 1235. The location of a rare French victory in the failed Irish Rebellion of 1798, Castlebar has a long military history. The town received its official town charter from King James I in 1613, Castlebar has been the major trading centre in County Galway for centuries.
